BEAD WALK

I like the pedestrian friendliness of China Town in Downtown Oakland.  Two of the stores I visit for beads:

Happy Crystals & Stones

Amazing amethyst and fossil beds are scattered throughout the store as well as cut and polished gem stones from all over the world.  Information on the medicinal and healing qualities of the stones share space in each display.  Books and pamphlets on gemstones are also available.  288 11th Street, Suite F, 510.238.8882

Silk Road Fabric

A place to find wonderful beaded frogs, tiny silk flowers and beaded fabric strips to help turn a recycled dress, coat or bag into fun new fashionable wear.  14th & Franklin

Indie “Buy Local” movement having economic impact…

I came across an article, “Localwashing, How Corporate America is co-opting “’local.’”  Some excerpts:   "HSBC, one of the biggest banks on the planet, has taken to calling itself  " the world’s local bank. ”  “Barnes & Nobles has launched a video blog site under the banner “All bookselling is local.”  After reporting on the bad news of the different campaigns corporations are using to cash in on the real “buy local” movements, the author gives us the positive, “In one way, all of this corporate localwashing is good news for local economy advocates: it represents the best empirical evidence yet that the grassroots  movement for locally produced goods and independently owned businesses is having a measurable impact on the choices people make."  {Stacy Mitchell, New Orleans GAMBIT Weekly, July 14th, 2009; reprinted in UTNE Reader, pages 11-13, Nov-Dec, 2009}
